mugshot

Well, here it is the work in progress for the last assignment in my illustration class for the semester. Bill Carmen handed each of us made up words, the assignment was to define it and illustrate it. The word I got was 'upher', sounded like a name to me and I said that, and he said we could go in any direction with this. So it sound like a viking name, so Upher Vienerkin it is. The image I got in my mind was that of a viking getting a mugshot taken because he was taken in. I spent all weekend on it and I need to clean it up a tad and that's it. Now I need to explain to Bill why I don't have the money to print this out...

Decals

My dad used to build models when I was a kid. Now I love him, but he ain't no artist, and since I am one and my model building skills are about average, he has me build them now. He has lined up a 1974 Aurora Superboy kit, and a re-issued 'Voyager' model kit from the Fantastic Voyage cartoon from the 1960's. The ship has no markings at all, it is simply white. And I thought I would make some. Using Adobe Illustrator I was able to recreate the CMDF logo from the movie itself and do my spin on military aircraft markings. I have a little more work I want to do, like change the font for the registration to a more military typeface, and then shrink them to scale for the model. I figure since the Voyager could be a government vehicle it would be marked like one. For the interior of the craft I am going to put a pin-up of Raquel Welch in the wall. Since she was in the movie I thought it would be cool.

A little more tweeking and Viola!

I printed out the album cover and it was too dark! I didn't like it, and since my financial resources are as limited as all get out, I have to pick and chose my battles. My instructor asked why I couldn't print another one, I told him flat out that I am cheap, the other reason was I don't have Photoshop or Illustrator at home, yet. The main deal was that it looks great if not better on the computer. He also had issues with the trees being too top heavy, so I went ahead and fixed that issue. I am glad though that he was willing to have me send in the PDF of the image for him to look at.

In my classes though I am bothered that I do all the talking when it comes to my pieces at the time of critique. I am glad to know what the teacher thinks and also willing to accept any advise that is given, but boy I would love to know what others are thinking when they see my work, I only say that because they don't say anything! There are times I wonder if I suck at this or what?! I am never bashful when offering my opinion about an aspect of someone's work, I will not go and trash their work even if it does suck, but I want to help build them up, honestly, I know it might not come across like that but I really want to help at times.

Finished for sure!!!

Well pending instructor criticism, it is done for now. Since that computer labs were open today I thought I would do a little more work on this piece. The Wolfmother logo on the previous postings was done in Illustrator, but i wanted to check and see if there was a font available for that logo, and there is. I used it in place of the logo I created in Illustrator because the work I did was off in a few spots. I also went ahead and added a subtitle for this piece because I wanted the song title that inspired this piece to be attached to the final product. I also created a version with some mountains behind the woman, but i'm not sure I like it that much, that's why I need to send to my instructor for his input.

Album cover for illustration

Doing an album cover for my illustration class. I decided to do mine for the band Wolfmother. The idea for the cover is simply a giant woman getting ready to stand up, but she has spotlights on her from helicopters, police, etc. right now it's a work in progress.

Isabeau...

Just thought i'd post a sketch I did of Michelle Pfeifer from Richard Donner's Ladyhawke. Enjoy! I was hoping to do it as a painting, but I think the sketch phase is good enough.
